I first played It Takes Two in 2021, but revisiting it in 2026 as a more attentive player made me realize how many pieces of the story are never fully explained. Cody and May go through an absurd, emotional, and sometimes dark co-op journey, but the game leaves several threads dangling. I don't think every question needs a definitive answer, but I still want to talk about the ones that stuck with me.

Will May Make More Time For Her Family?

May's job as an engineer is depicted as demanding and all-consuming. I kept waiting for the game to tell me whether she would cut back her hours after returning to human form. She clearly understands that she is missing Rose's childhood and that her absence helped fracture the marriage. But there is no promise of a changed work schedule. If she goes back to the same routine, the family's problems are far from solved.

How Much Of Each Level Exists In Reality?

The environments are connected to real places around the family's property, like the tree, Rose's room, and the snow globe. But inside those spaces, everything is much larger and more detailed than possible. I still don't know if Dr. Hakim created pocket realities or if Cody and May were hallucinating. The magic is never measured, which makes me wonder how much of what I played actually happened.

How Long Did Their Adventure Last?

In real time, the game takes around 13 hours to beat. I have never figured out how long that is for Rose. Her father sits motionless in a chair and her mother is unconscious somewhere, and Rose apparently doesn't panic. It is also still daytime when they wake up. Either the whole adventure happened over a surreal compressed time, or the game simply ignored the practical horror of two comatose parents.

Did The Inanimate Objects Have Real Emotions?

One of the most disturbing moments is destroying Cutie the Elephant while she begs for mercy. That scene only works if the object has genuine feelings, but the game never explains whether Dr. Hakim granted sentience or if these items were always alive. I still wish there had been a clearer rule for why a hammer can talk but other household objects cannot.

What Will The Squirrels And Wasps Do Now?

The squirrel and wasp war is one of my favorite parts of the game. But after Cody and May protect the bumblebee and flee from the Squirrel Chief, the conflict is left unresolved. I have no idea whether the squirrels ever learned the truth about the Wasp Queen or if the two sides kept fighting after the couple returned to human form.

How Much Did They Affect Reality?

Rose notices some of the damage, like the elephant and the grandfather clock. But what about the explosions, fires, and destroyed insect enemies? I kept asking whether those were physical events or emotional metaphors. The game mixes both, so I can't tell how much repair work Cody and May would actually have to do around the house.

Where Was Rose Planning To Go?

Rose runs to the bus stop with a plan to leave. For a young child, she seemed unusually determined. The game never reveals her destination. I wondered if she had a specific relative in mind, a friend's house, or if she was just walking toward the nearest sign of escape. Whatever the case, it made her sadness feel painfully real.

Do The Dolls Still Exist?

After the spell breaks, we never see the dolls again. I want to know if they are still in the attic, still in Rose's room, or if they disappeared. If they exist, do they carry the scratches and damage from the adventure? That tiny physical evidence would be a strange reminder of everything Cody and May endured.

Are There More Dr. Hakims Out There?

Rose owns one copy of the Book of Love by Dr. Hakim, but there must be other copies in the world. I can't stop thinking about how many other couples are being dragged into similar magical therapy sessions. Is every copy sentient? Is the universe secretly full of Dr. Hakims managing struggling relationships? The scale of that idea is both funny and terrifying.

So Are They Together Or What?

The final kiss breaks the curse, but when Cody and May return to human form, they only tell Rose they will always love her. They never explicitly say they are staying together. I think the ambiguity is intentional and mature, but I still finished the game asking the same question: are they actually fixed, or did they just survive the lesson?

I don't need every mystery solved. The best parts of It Takes Two leave space for interpretation. But even in 2026, these questions keep me thinking long after the credits roll.
